Loungewear: COVID-19 Korean Fashion Trend Rising In Popularity

Ever since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have been spending more of our time at home. Even though we are slowly settling into the ‘new normal’, there are some habits from the lockdown that are hard to shake off, and wearing pyjamas all day is definitely one of them.

The good news is, although we are no longer confined to staying at home and starting to return to the office, or going out on casual outings in small groups, that doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to the comfort of loungewear

Let’s take a look at the loungewear trend, why it has been rising in popularity recently, and how you can pull off the style as well!

Loungewear is sometimes referred to as two-mile fashion, and has overlaps with athleisure. Two-mile fashion, as its name suggests, refers to a dressing style that is suitable to be worn anywhere within two miles of home, such as going grocery shopping, or picking up some food.

However, these days, two-mile fashion can be seen outside of the expected two-mile radius, with more and more people choosing to dress in hoodies or sweatpants even when going to the office.

If your boss is one of those employers who are totally cool with you not wearing a full suit to work, then the loungewear trend is perfect for you!

Now that we know what the loungewear trend is, how can we pull off the style?

The thought of showing up to work in full pyjama-style loungewear might be daunting if you’re used to dressing formally at work. A good jump off point would be to start with a single loungewear item. For example, pairing sweatpants with a nicer top, or styling your usual work pants with a hoodie.

If that still feels a little too casual for you, dressing up the outfit by layering with accessories is also an option! You can complete your outfit with pretty jewellery, or even a nice handbag.

Of course, this style is not only popular with the working crowd. Many Korean youths can be seen rocking the loungewear style, and not just when going out with friends, but even to university as well!

Loungewear is especially perfect for particularly cold lecture halls too, and the ease and convenience of loungewear means less time required to get ready in the morning, so you can get in a little extra snooze time in the morning.

Wearing loungewear out is not a new trend, and the athleisure style has been a popular style in Korean fashion for the past few years, with APink’s Naeun kickstarting the trend by simply wearing a pair of leggings in a dance practice video. Even if you're staying at home, getting dressed up in elevated loungewear can help to boost your mood and productivity.

While Korea is no stranger to the loungewear trend, it has definitely grown in popularity since the start of the pandemic, and it seems like the trend will continue even after the pandemic is over.
